Cassie Baker was a student in Community Transformations DTS, September 2014, and went on outreach to New York City. I asked her to share a short testimony on her experience in the DTS and here it is!
"Where to even begin with the experience that was Discipleship Training School…
I guess I’ll begin with the one thing that remained a theme for me throughout DTS (and will remain) until the end - the incredibly real, overwhelming, unconditional love of God. The love God has for us, His children, became so much more real to me during my time in DTS. I’ve grown up in church my whole life, singing “Jesus loves me this I know” since the Sunday school days. But I never fully took the meaning of this to heart. Yes, I had a relationship with God, but that relationship changes when you dedicate your time to fully pursue knowing Him. DTS is unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. You are there to fall deeper in love with Jesus each day. Now we don’t have to be in DTS to live this lifestyle of course, but the special thing was that I was in a community of others going after the same thing. The friendships formed, laughter shared, tears shed, and abundant hugs are times that I will never forget. The community in DTS is the most thrilling time of “life together” I have lived.
As I grew in deeper love and relationship with our savior, my heart for sharing this joy and loving others grew. My perspective on the world’s need for a savior was rocked. And the fact that I had the opportunity to take the amazing news of Christ to people who needed to hear it is so humbling and exciting. The practical ways I learned to love people is something I have taken with me and pray for the zeal to continue on. The boldness and bravery with which Jesus equips us is another humbling take away I experienced in DTS. He truly does make us brave!
There’s so much more I could say about the things I learned and the way God and the Holy Spirit spoke to me throughout DTS; things that I am still looking back on and learning from. But, I will sum it up with this: When we step out of our comfort zone, fully trusting God’s leading and plan for us, it far exceeds any expectations we have for ourselves. He’s good. Really really good. And He loves the people of His Earth. A whole whole lot."
