Hi family, this is Kat again!
This time I'd love to show you some of my favorite spots in downtown Kona. All this is a short 5-10 min walk from campus, so it's easy to get to! I love food, so that's why there's mostly food-related places, but I am convinced that loving food is a universal thing, so I'm sure you will appreciate all these places just as much as me. Though Kona is small, there are lots of other good spots not included in this list. It wouldn't be fun for me to show you all of them anyways, this is just to get you stoked and ready to explore for yourself! So here we go.
Let's start with a little overview over downtown Kona. I drew a rough map for you, but please keep in mind that it is not super accurate!
1. The Pier
Who doesn't love the beach? We have a lot of different beaches in the area, but this is the closest one and you can actually walk to it! A few bonus tips on the pier: there is free wifi because of the hotel that is right there, so if you sit on the grass, you can enjoy wifi privileges! Also, if you are an early riser; before sunrise every morning chances are high for you to swim with dolphins!
As a Norwegian I am ready to admit that America has the best burgers I have tasted so far, and Splashers have a really great selection! It's on the pricier side, so maybe save up with your room mates or your outreach team to eat here once or twice. It's a real treat and always a good time!
3. Longboards Pizza
This is our favorite spot to get pizza! It is actually run by friends from the campus, so it feels extra good to be supporting them as you dig into some delicious pepperoni pizza slices. You can also get a 28" pizza (it's huge!!) and share it with your friends for fun!
I'm telling you, this is the place to get sushi! It's a little bit hidden away and hard to find, but it is delicious and it is where the locals go for their sushi. The waiting time can be long and the opening hours uncertain, but take my word for it; it is worth it. Cheap and great quality!
5. Farmer's Market
Fresh fruit and vegetables. Jewelry and flip flops. Get it all at the Farmer's Market for a good price. I think they are there most days of the week. You can get great deals like five papayas for $2!
6. Daylight Mind Coffee
For a lot of people, this is the go-to coffee shop in town! Kona is known for it's great coffee, so we do have a lot of coffee shops, but this one really is great. It's right by the ocean, so you can go outside and enjoy the fresh breeze, or you can sit inside and enjoy the beautiful wooden architecture. They have a restaurant downstairs that I have not tried yet, but I hear it is excellent! My favorite order here is some iced black coffee and a blueberry scone!
7. Kona Haven
This is another really great coffee shop! It's by the water and they always have really great service. I love going here in the mornings and get their breakfast deal; a black coffee and a breakfast bagel with eggs and bacon!
8. FroYo & 9. Outback
I love frozen yoghurt! This place is so close to campus, it is scary. Too easy to walk down with a group of friends for a late night froyo. The people who work here are amazing! They even have a YWAM discount, so remember your student card when you go.
Outback has some great food! They have 50% off appetizers that I have heard are really great! (Ask Icthus for details!)
So this is my list! I hope that you will be able to make your own after living here for a bit. Kona really has so many treasures ready to be found!
